The Brainwave Synchronizer is a Light and Sound device used to control brainwave frequencies and patterns, to achieve specific objectives. These objectives typically include;
The brainwave synchronizer works on the principle of entrainment, whereby the light and sound device creates an oscillating frequency which the brain starts to follow after a period of around 5-6 minutes. When the lights and sound from the synchronizer pulse at the speed of normal brainwaves when a session begins, they quickly synchronize. Your brainwaves will then follow as the light and sound stimulation shifts into the frequencies of another mind state. This is called the frequency following effect, or entrainment. The scientific term when lights are used for this is usually Photic Driving. Each pulse of the stimulation being used must evoke enough of a response from the brain in order for entrainment to be effective. This response by the brain from sensory stimulation is called cortical evoked response. This can happen from any type of sensory stimulation, but the most effective means of doing this is through light and sound combined. |

Sound has a very small effect on brainwaves when used alone, and shifting a mind state effectively requires more than stimulation from sound at a sustained frequency. The brainwave synchronizer uses complex pulse patterns of light and sound that years of research show are best for the brainwave frequency following effect. To get a better understanding on how the brainwave synchronizer works, lets have a look at brain and brainwave basics. Brain Synchronization Basics The brain consists of 2 hemispheres, namely the left and right hemisphere. Each side processes information in different ways, with the left focusing more on logic and analytics and the right focusing more on creativity and imagination. Depending on how we have adapted to life with things such as our career or lifestyle, we The left side of the brain processes information in a linear manner. It processes from part to whole. It takes pieces, lines them up, and arranges them in a logical order; then it draws conclusions. The right brain however, processes from whole to parts, holistically. It starts with the answer. It sees the big picture first, not the details. If you are right-brained, you may have difficulty following a lecture unless you are given the big picture first. Those who have achieved hemispheric synchronization tend to be more flexible than either the left or the right-brain dominant folks; neurologically speaking, you could do most tasks through either a left-brain or a right-brain method! You are able to draw on the strengths of both the right and left hemispheres of your brain depending upon a given situation. This combination makes you a creative and flexible thinker.
Using electroencephalography, we are able to record the electrical activity in the brain which results from the firing of neurons in the brain. The diagram to the right shows a typical electroencephalogram graph taken from an EEG machine showing various frequencies and modulations, or brainwaves.
The Brainwave Synchronizer
The Brainwave Synchronizer is incredibly sturdy, conveniently small, ergonomic, and very easy to use. All you need to do is power it on, choose one of the 49 preset sessions, put on the headphones and lite frames, and close your eyes. The session will guide you into other mental states by stimulating your senses with special patterns of sound and synchronized lights. You will be instantly transported to a profound state of relaxation.
Your stress from the day is released as your brainwaves begin following the frequencies you are perceiving. The frequencies used in the Brainwave Synchronizer sessions mimic those found in brainwaves during activities like meditation, dreaming, and deeply focused concentration. You experience and feel these states as your brainwaves synchronize to the lights and sound. Your brain begins producing more theta and alpha waves, and less beta waves - what we have during busy and scattered thinking throughout the day. The Brainwave Synchronizer was designed for people who are looking for a powerful light and sound mind machine. Even with the low price, it is still packed with features. The Brainwave Synchronizer includes Audiostrobe technology for synchronizing special music CDs with the lights.
Binaural Beats
Binaural beats are probably the most well-known stimulus used for entrainment. They have been shown to work, but some of the other audio entrainment techniques are more effective. The Brainwave Synchronizer produces binaural beats, dual binaural beats and other audio entrainment methods. You can use the Brainwave Synchronizer as is with the 71 programs that it comes supplied with, but if you are really enthusiastic in exploring the complete scope of the brain synchronizer, you can use the session editor. You can even download sessions created by others and add them to your selection of programs, or upload your own to share with others - there is plenty of space on the Brainwave Synchronizer allocated just for this purpose! Is the Brainwave Synchronizer Safe for Everyone to Use? No. If you plan to order the Brainwave Synchronizer, please make sure you are not sensitive to strobe effects (e.g., 5% of people with epilepsy can have their seizures triggered by flashing lights). Make sure that you do not allow others who have this form of epilepsy to use your machine. Brainwave Synchronizers have been used for years - thousands of people have yielded their benefits. However, if you are sensitive to light or have PhotoSensitive Epilepsy, then the Brainwave Synchronizer is not for you. It is possible for a Brainwave Synchronizer to cause seizures in these individuals in the same way that oscillating lights or 'strobe' lights can. If you, or anyone else who shares your machine are using a pacemaker, suffering cardiac arrhythmia or other head disorders, on tranquilizers or psychotropic medicines, have epilepsy or visual photosensitivity, the Brainwave Synchronizer should be avoided. |
Yes the brain synchronizer has several programs that are designed a wholebrain state learning. You can actually plug another device into an Aux port where you can play the material you wish to learn while the binaural beats put you into a fast learning state. The programs that do this are described in the manual/downloads available above.
We recommend that you use alkaline batteries with the Brainwave Synchronizer for best results; under normal use you can expect approximately 50 hours continuous operation. You can also use rechargeable Ni-Cad "AA" batteries, which should last roughly 10-20 hours between recharges.
Windows 98 or later is recommended (we've heard that this may be run under Windows 95, but have not certified it for so doing ourselves). You need less than 3 MB disc space; practically any system that runs W98+ should work well.
It is especially important as a means for blocking external distractions, and pulsed audio waveforms can help reduce distracting thoughts via patterned stimuli. Binaural beat frequencies can induce brainwave activity at the beat frequencies in some cases, which further assists in accessing certain states of awareness. Generally speaking, the audio component is much less important than the visual, since a large part of our brain (about 40%) is involved with vision. If you are using AudioStrobe or other forms of audio input, such as various forms of spoken word (affirmations, NLP, etc.) the importance of the audio increases in the overall experience.
The AudioStrobe technique stores an inaudible control signal on digital media such as compact discs; these signals directly control the pulsing of the lights. Because the signals are mastered at the same time as the CD, very precise synchronization of the audio and visual stimulation can be achieved. AudioStrobe was developed by Mr. Andrzej Slawinski of AudioStrobe GMBH, Germany.
Check the following: 1. Have you selected the proper serial port 2. Is the serial cable plugged snugly into the computer and Brainwave Synchronizer? 3. Are you using the proper cable? (it should be black; the ThoughtStream cable looks identical but is beige) 4. Is Brainwave Synchronizer in DL mode? (if not, press the middle button until it is, and repeat the download process. Remember that the Brainwave Synchronizer digital display will show rapidly changing numbers if it is receiving data.
Follow these steps: a. Launch Brainwave Synchronizer Editor and click the Update Code button on the top right hand side of the program window. b. Notice that there are three checked boxes on the lower right, under send data to Brainwave Synchronizer in the above mentioned screen; in the future you can selectively upload new session data, code or user preferences separately. Leave them all checked for the moment. c. Point your cursor to the Brainwave SynchronizerCODE30.pts (or whichever version is the latest.) file and left-click to highlight the filename. d. Be sure your Brainwave Synchronizer is connected to your PC, and if necessary press the MODE (middle) button until the display reads DL (for download). Verify that the PC cable is plugged into the AUX input on the lower right side of Brainwave Synchronizer. e. Now left-click the Upload Code button. You will see a display on screen indicating that the firmware update is downloading. The Brainwave Synchronizer display should also show rapidly changing numbers during the download; if this is not the case then either you have not selected the correct serial port, or the serial cable is not properly connected, or you are not in DL mode.
We chose these colors because they include a large range of evocable feeling-states, ranging from red (=energizing) to green (=relaxing) with a range of possibilities in between, especially amber, which is most efficient at evoking the peak performance state. Also, our testers reported that these colors produced the most vivid imagery.
Single-color stimulation does not take into account the differential effects of colored light stimulation on mood and EEG. Brainwave Synchronizer is the first system to provide real-time control over the brightness of both colors simultaneously, allow smooth shifts between the 250+ possible color combinations (16 shades each of red and green). So a typical ramp from 16 Hz to 8 Hz might start all red, shifting to amber at 12 Hz and all green at 8 Hz. Or, you can try your own combinations to explore more unique effects.
It is possible to elicit more complex states of consciousness by using more than one frequency simultaneously. In fact, most states of consciousness are not exemplified by a single frequency band. The Brainwave Synchronizer is the only machine available today which at least partially remedies that situation.
There are several reasons. First, the light frequency, brightness, color, etc. may be used to provide you with direct feedback regarding changes in your physiology associated with the use of light/sound stimulation--whether it be increased or decreased arousal, etc. Secondly, sessions may be created which alternate between light/sound stimulation and biofeedback; this was the approach taken with the Biolight study which led to significant improvement in college grade point average in those who used this system. Thirdly, the light/sound parameters may be "tuned" in real time to craft highly specific states of consciousness.
We were originally preparing the system for the introduction of a low-cost, multichannel biofeedback system which would have more sensors. For various reasons this did not materialize. Only the EDR 1 setting is active with the ThoughtStream + Brainwave Synchronizer combination, although you can assign and scale this data to control any or all of six Brainwave Synchronizer parameters.
Although we have not tested Brainwave Synchronizer Editor with Windows emulation programs, we've heard that it does work with them. One customer recently wrote, "I found that running MS Virtual PC with Windows 98 on a Mac utilizing a Keyspan PDA USB adapter works just fine as far as I can see. The keyspan adapter can be used for both a Mac or a PC but should be configured for a Mac then within the VPC preferences just map one of the Comm ports to it. Its a little more problematical to configure it in the VPC as it sets up as comm port 3 which would not work smoothly."
Using the stereo audio patch cord which came with your Brainwave Synchronizer, connect the PC jack on top of the ThoughtStream to the AUX jack on your Brainwave Synchronizer. If you have selected a ThoughtStream-enabled program, the Brainwave Synchronizer will automatically sense the ThoughtStream and run it with biofeedback control.
